Many people are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts and this may impact on their self confidence. This mainly affects women and can make buying the right size of underwear difficult. Enlargement of the male breast (known as gynaecomastia) can also cause similar physical and psychological problems.
The breasts may be either too big, too small, or uneven in size due to your normal genetic makeup, or due to different factors including weight loss, weight gain, following pregnancy/breast feeding, or the natural ageing process. There are a variety of procedures available to help improve the appearance and volume of the breasts and help restore your self confidence.
Large breast size may be due to different factors, such as age (adolescence, menopause), hormones (including HRT treatment), height, weight and genetic inheritance. They may cause discomfort of the neck, back and shoulders due to their size, while also causing social embarrassment, difficulty with exercising and finding fashionable clothing.
A breast reduction operation makes the breasts smaller, by removing fat, breast tissue and skin. The remaining breast tissue and nipples are uplifted leaving smaller breasts. A breast reduction can also help to improve symmetry in uneven breasts.
Breast size and shape is genetically determined, but can change throughout life in response to weight changes, pregnancy/breast feeding and ageing.
As part of the natural ageing process, the elastic tissues of the breast and skin tend to droop/sag (ptosis). This can also be seen
after pregnancy, breast feeding and weight loss. It is normal for most women to have two breasts which are slightly different in size and shape. If this difference is significant, then they may also seek surgical correction.
Breast asymmetry is very common and is usually due to unequal breast development but can also follow previous breast surgery. Correction of the asymmetry may require surgery to one or both breasts, by the same or different surgical techniques.
An assessment of the size and shape of each breast is made at the outpatient consultation, after which a discussion is had about matching results with goals and expectations.
Some men can suffer from a condition called gynaecomastia (man boobs), where there is an excess of breast tissue in the chest.
A breast reduction procedure can improve the appearance of the chest and increase self-confidence.
